  • «Το άλλο μισό της βαρβαρότητας είναι να την ανέχεσαι» κι αυτό το ακραίο φαινόμενο αποτελεί ήδη  ένδειξη μεγάλης ανοχής  - συνενοχής στο βωμό μιας επιχειρηματικότητας που αγνοεί ηθικά όρια αλλά και μιας «αυτοκαταστροφικής συμμόρφωσης» για «…να μην φανώ κακός». Με ποιους τρόπους στηρίζουμε (οι «ειδικοί» κι οι τοπικές αρχές) το ανοσοποιητικό σύστημα της κοινότητας που τη βοηθά να αντιδρά προληπτικά σε πρώτο επίπεδο και υπεύθυνα και να ΜΗΝ ΘΥΜΑΤΟΠΟΙΕΙΤΑΙ; Να εξελίσσεται υγιώς και με συνεισφορά στο κοινό καλό;

    -Τις επιβλαβείς επιπτώσεις στην υγεία των περιοίκων;
    -Τη στέρηση της ελευθερίας «να ζήσω όπως επιθυμώ στο ίδιο μου το σπίτι»;
    - Τη στέρηση της δυνατότητας εργασίας καθώς είναι αδύνατη (για ορισμένους περισσότερο από άλλους) η εστίαση σε οποιοδήποτε έργο απαιτεί ησυχία, συγκέντρωση, ακρόαση…

    Υπολογίζεται σε χρήμα; Σε ψυχική οδύνη; «Ανταποδοτικά» του επιχειρηματικού κέρδους, των καθαρισμών των αυτοκινήτων;
    Το να υποκύπτουν οι 100 στις επαγγελματικές ανάγκες του ενός αποτελεί καταπίεση, επιβολή και αυταρχικότητα άνευ προηγουμένου!

Picture
Upon Arrival for the Next Stage World Gathering 2018 ~ Photo by Anna Bardaka

Many of you may wonder: Why are you organising this retreat at this place?
-Where is this tiny, dry island, anyway? -Why Greece and why there?
-How is NSW associated with Halki, Greece?

Part of it has to do with the story of this gathering, the story of this team and its own gravity points of work... its experiences, relationship, friendships... For some -including me of course- Greece both as a country and as a cultural field, considering her geographical position, her sociopolitical history and state, her DNA and gifts to the World along with her severe crisis and unforeseeable “economics-as-we-used-to-know-security” is an ideal place regarding the cracks of newness and the big questions of breaking through from a collapsing system to the Next Stage of Humanity; this is the very essence and the calling of this very Gathering: in micro and macro scale.

Part of it also is Greece’s hospitality capacity and constant call as a country that can really take care of your needs for relaxation, connection with timelessness, unique human touch and connection with others and self... This is perhaps because Greece has never been an ideal example of the “industrial revolution” as most of the Western countries have, at least. Greece has always been difficult to fit in a category of this kind.

And a big part of it has to do with the consciousness around the purpose of this gathering and the consciousness of Next Stage Organisation and Organisations: This very point I would like to address in this article.

Since the start of Next Stage World gatherings in Rhodes and after the first “piloting and experimental” meeting, we choose to host people from across the World in small places. Rhodes itself is not big but we went even smaller: small villages, small places with big community heart and rootedness...

We chose Monolithos, a tiny village of 300 people in the footsteps of Akramitis mountain in southern Rhodes. Along with the transformative power of our questions and connections, we were also trasnformed by the power of that hospitality that actually allowed everything to happen... An ancient and yet also so “NSW hospitality”.

So this gathering touches again that fundamental value and element of hospitality, which is offered beyond “professional excellence”... It is rather a spiritual gift that has no “consultants” or mentoring in the conventional sense behind it.
It springs from the heart... Just like every real NSW vocation, profession, team, organisation.

Let me put it very bluntly: With the NSW gathering we go beyond “tourism”, “conference tourism” and the likes... We embody and try to infuse as much as possible in the local hosting organisations (yes, and an island, a village a whole country is such!) the notion and practice of sustainability and circular economy. This we invite our hosts in these small places to join, too. Setting up small and big steps in waste management for example in the small village or in the venue that is hosting us, offering simple ideas of good practice that can be adopted by a hotel in its local context, inviting the local traditional wisdom in dealing with natural resources, implementing ways of actually becoming conscious of our eco footprint, involving the local community, the school and the passers by in meaningful conversations and in future visions, working on their own plans, enriching them – supporting them.

Furthermore with the organising of the Gathering in these places we put in practice the following questions:
What happens when you come to an island to create rather than consume?
What happens when you step on this brand new-to-your-eyes-landscape with curiosity and openness?
What happens when you synergise with it rather than rely on it to cover your needs?
What potential do you unleash when you initiate meaningful conversations on every interaction with the locals or when you let yourself reveal your story to the curiosity and friendliness of the locals?
What really happens when you go somewhere, far most when you join such a gathering, to re-visit yourself? To share the struggles and the victories of your life vocation?
To meet like-hearted people who are willing to open up, expose their scars and fuel more visions and actions for “impossible projects”?...

We do know that place is always a key-partner in these learning opportunities. It carries amazing power, it’s a container that can be a catalyst in the process and the learning and our ability to collaborate with it is also a critical factor.
~How do a place and its people reveal themselves to you?

~ How did Halki show up for me?
Beginning of July 2017 was my first journey to Halki. It was a windy day and our small vessel was almost flying up and down along the curve from Kamiros Skala but the smiling service and conversation with Katerina and her experienced captain father made the whole route very enjoyable and exciting. Even from the first sight as we were approaching the small port, the revelation started. A picturesque waterfront, smaller than Symi but equally astonishing... Colourfulness, the unique Dodecanese neoclassical houses, the bell tower of the church, the brown hills and the herb smells...
Every moment, Halki was revealing more of her elegance, simplicity and magic to us... Her peacefulness was one of the core characteristics of this beauty. The quality of that peacefulness is hard to describe. It’s like the island is taking you to a secret shell... where you can listen better to yourself, nature, inner and outer...

It is this very element that we find precious in the hosting place of such a gathering.
This peace... that allows you to really listen to the deeper questions, the profound essences, the more insightful aspects of your field of work and your organisation, allowing you to receive the signals of intuition and even sharpen your mindfulness capacity in times of extreme noise on everyday basis, complex issues on every step of the way, big challenges affecting leadership, collaboration, management, goals and whole purpose driven teams and organisations.

This peace and this pace... This precious slowing down that we rarely can “achieve” in the ordinary conditions, even though, paradoxically it is one of the key foundations for quality decision making and healthy working environment. Pace is integral in both the success and the ...integrity of Next Stage Organisations and this unique space of supporting the velocity and range of the NSW movement that this Global Gathering is.
Perhaps it is no co-incidence that this quality of the island reached the radars of U.N. when UNESCO declared Halki as “The island of Peace and Friendship of Global Youth” in the early ‘80s.

Painted with words reflecting feelings and thoughts, trying in vain to match the above and below images, this is only part of Halki described here, waiting to host you and your team-mates in this unique gathering. It is a special kind of holidays that the island and this region of the Aegean Sea are offering; we can call it “Wholidays” for the betterment and evolution of ourselves, our own life-journeys and this World...

Bring along your family to this Wholiday, too! :)

A Life from the Heart Retreat:
Greek Practical Philosophy meets Buddhist Mindfulness Practice
Rhodes, 5-9 October 2018

 I love pebbles.
Small or big, round or not… these stones are glowing masterpieces carved by nature, water, the sea.
They live for thousands, millions of years carrying ancient stories; they create ripples in contemporary waters of change…

I love pebbles.
They are ingredients and materials of ultimate artistry.
Artful grounds, floors and pavements of black and white combinations between which many more, endless, combinations reside, fit and dance.

We found special pebbles in Auberge Kalopetri*, Kritinia in Rhodes, our hosting venue for this retreat.  Colourful, painted in harmonious shapes, mandalas, flowers, patterns of condensed stories -and beauty.
For the first time it was this kind of beauty, the beloved naturally-polished, water~carved and water~caressing stones that created the circular centre of a gathering. These alone created the powerful, protective centre that then hosted more authentic beauty of the place, this corner of the Aegean and the World: Rhodes, Greece. The well hosted and protected by the pebbles’ rim core was a bouquet of rosemary, bougainvillea and olive tree branches in a ceramic vase, made locally as well.

The centre of this circle of people, calling and paths invited already the way… and the connection to the origin, Philosophy and Practice. This very landscape and its plants, herbs, trees, birds, insects, animals was vividly breathing in our vision every moment, taking us instantly 30 generations back in the Cosmopolitan Stoics, the ever-possibility-expanding Skeptics and the radically friendly Epicureans: an amazing journey to the quests and questions on Eudemonia, Good Life ~Amazing Life. The East met Greece and Greece met the East then and now. Alexander the Great, Socrates and Gotama, Pyrrho and the Gymnosophists were all more or less contemporary, crafting similar sharp questions about Life, seeking for wisdom out in the world and cosmos, teaching and being taught and at the same time diving more and more inside and cultivating inner strengths for these quests: peace, ataraxia, mindfulness…

Prototyping a Retreat…

This gathering is unique. It’s a special blend of practices and approaches of Life invited together, to be explored.
Mindfulness & Practical Φilosophy ~ Peace & Quest-ions ~  Serenity & Wonder,
Stillness and Examination of Life : These are central polarities that sit in the centre of this Enquiry and …NonEnquiry in a sense.
It is a full stop and an arrow of direction at the same time.

Four weeks after the experience, some reflections arise naturally as it is digested creating ripples like the pebbles in my blood cells and synapses.

What was it? How was it?
Here are a few answers coming from the “designing and hosting process perspective” but also the learning itself at work:

The space, physical and psychological was harmonious…
The pillars were set by the solid YES to the invitation, the experience offered as a gift to self and loved ones by the participants and the hosts. A lovely intimate group of 14 of us coming from as far and close as Australia, Argentina, U.S., France, Austria, Germany and the U.K. joining and co-creating something like this for the first time. These pillars in terms of “flow” (as paradoxical as it may sound) were also set by the teaching sessions, the concise, beautiful and always grounded word of Stephen and Martine Batchelor, our teachers and Buddhist authors who radiated their dedication and …authority so care-fully and generously.
Epicurus said it so accurately: “What we enjoy –and not what we have- constitutes our abundance”. And yes, we had plenty! :)
And so then the “corner stones” of the retreat were additionally planted with the inputs of the Philosophy Schools by Juergen on the Stoics and the Sceptics and me on the Epicurean Garden.

Mindfulness practice has also been key, the anchor to the Dharma early in the morning, throughout the day in between sessions and closing the day. Harmonious connector and pause, the cushion, the chair, the step…
How can one actually define or say what mindfulness “represents”, particularly in this context?

We collaborated closely with the physical space: the outdoors condition and the constant touch with nature, the floor as posting and sitting ground.
Creativity was called it to shape the learning spaces and the etiquettes while holding the integrity of each practice and even being guided by it.

Keep simplicity as a guide/guardian to the core questions was important. The questions just naturally emerged as we listened quietly and then boldly attracted attention, conversation, action.

Alignment of the how and the what with Φilosophy and Mindfulness in terms of content and key-principles of each school and the Dharma.

A powerful element of this retreat was being present in the landscape of Greece. A felt sense of Time~Space Unity.

With reference to process element here is how the days were structured in an overall “emergent design” approach:

Circles: the openness and focus of this ancient process was there for the
Welcome and Check in - The Appreciation of the Space/Retreat Council– and Check out ~ Closure.

The Φ-Philosophy Café: Perfect for smoothly setting the conditions to going deeper, weave and further into the fields of Practical Philosophy, Buddhism/Dharma, the questions and paths. Harvests were carrying so much resonance and clarity!

The Open Space
Focusing on what really matters now and inviting/hosting conversations with the co-travelers to strengthen the life from a heart and to move forward on our path of good life.  For most of the participants this was the first time to experience Open Space and it was ideal for that step forward in taking responsibility and care for what really matters here now for them. Self organisation magic struck so gracefully!

And when I now, a month later, pick up the good stone-pebble and see this eye in the centre, I do know how this experience has been a gift.
Expanding consciousness, expanding soul, expanding friendship for humanity, nature, self, life and expanding capacity to co-craft these spaces of learning and beauty for “building the new city”, our World while building ourselves, the comm-unity …from scratch, wisdom and breath…

Τι δύναμη έχει λοιπόν μια σύναξη (κι όχι ένα «συμβατικό συνέδριο») ανθρώπων από όλο τον Κόσμο που πρωτοστατούν στο κίνημα για την αλλαγή και επαναπροσδιορισμό των οργανισμών στη Ρόδο; Πώς εξελίσσεται η ίδια η σύναξη ως οργάνωση κι οργανισμός ως τώρα και ποια η δυναμική της;

Picture
"There is a Room in Rhodes, We Call the SunRising Room..."

It all rhymes well, indeed… and YOU are invited!
Yes, it’s YOU, Dear friend-guest-visitor and co-creator.  In this room and in this House you are seen as the precious guest, the friend who brings gifts of colourful experiences, amazing talents, journey-scents of east and west, north and south, capacities and capabilities, step traces of origin and destination, gifts of dreams; a guest who hosts his/her own soul-yearnings…
And our common yearning and highest care of authenticity, Self, Community, Synergy.

In this room you have the opening towards the first greeting of the new day.
You are awakened by the Sun’s first greeting in his very home-island.

As part of Synergy’s offerings of the noble art of hosting, cultivating and building “emerald cultures”, cultures of thriving, inner and outer, cultures of real collaboration, personal and collective leadership, participation and creative pareas bringing their “meraki”, fun and magic “at work” , this new invitation is already shining through, welcoming 2017. The SunRising Room is a core part of what Synergy is as a hub of local and translocal collaborations, weaved through the very profound principles of hospitality, integrity and participatory leadership and building relationships and artful, sacred economy for the “Next-Stage World” …The World and Life we want for us and the next generations. And it all starts from our own life, work, homes, families, organisations; Our ways of relating to self and each other, our ways of organizing, purposefully and compassionately.

Process as container of relationship and efficiency
We know that Process, “the how” is container of relationship and efficiency…
We also know that “synergy” is both a subtle and very tangible wise design of being together, hosting teams, communication and collaboration, hosting the honourable “xenos”/foreign/guest, hosting diversity. We see this so inspiringly in nature and living systems. So in this experience, being hosted in the SunRising Room, you are embraced in this wisdom and joy of “synergetic process”, creative collaboration and you have all our offerings at your choice and co-creation intention-attention. Here is a handful of these gifts available for combination in your stay, holy days, retreat days or creative active working days with us:
  • Mentoring and coaching around your learning edge questions
  • Morning practices over nutritious, traditional or exotic breakfasts …and beyond
  • Mindfulness practices fostering awareness of who you are
  • Meaningful conversations with you, friends and/or in the community
  • Self-awareness games, dialogues, interactive techniques by the fireplace or on the beach…
  • Guided walks in the beauties of Rhodes
  • Diving into the gems of meaning and inspiration of the Hellenic language
  • “Meeting the local” sessions based on your special interests and curiosity
  • Storytelling and myth-sharing from the old and future journeys in places, fields of work and dreams
  • Cooking pleasure and the deliciousness of local organic gardens, products …and recipes
  • And: Ah the precious gifts of self-organised flow…

«Χρήμα» -  What is needed as basis of our economy – Lessons from the Ancestors…
Present as presents in the room are colours and artworks from the crafts of nature and everyday life, both beautiful and simple. Present, though, are presents from the past, too and the precious ancestors. Maria’s grandmother’s rugs and chair-mats made by humble materials of the previous century in times when creativity transforms poverty into beauty and usefulness… bringing forth through cracks of space and crisis lessons for today. As the wise hellenic language reveals this is the foundation of economy. The word for “money” in Greek is «χρήμα», which translates into “what is needed”, what’s needed for life to flourish, for balance and sustainable income-outcome, real eco (home)-nomy (balanced distribution, management, order). This is the very foundation that has brought the SunRising Room into life since the beginning with friends and family contributing into its hosting capacity in offering and receiving other gifts of hospitality, manifesting the power of abundance in exchange economy.
Thus the bed in this room is a gift of our friends and partners in proaction learning, Rainer and Lena. The magically assorted chest of drawers is a generous gift by family, brother Michalis and his wife Vasso with whom we cherish a lovely mutual exchange -something that happens often in the Greek family culture.  This is exactly our economy-principle in opening the SunRising Room to you. An agreement and understanding of the value of this experience, your own needs, our needs to make this experience unique and valuable,  in a frame and spirit of our hospitality in service of life, humanity, synergy and love. Every time, with every guest, every friend and partner who visits we co-create a unique frame of hospitality, “a contract of mutual respect, and generosity”.

In the ancestors’ gift collection in this room there is also a “flour sack”, two loom-weaved light rugs, pillowcases, blankets and other fabric-made pieces that are calling for bridges between cultures, generations, arts and crafts, practices… What would your own presence see, feel and offer to these and how would it interact with them?...

So we invite you to come and stay with us and be honorably hosted in the SunRising Room, and here are –only- some aspects of its identity and location:
The room belongs to Synergy, our Home’s and Life’s greater vision. A room that belongs to a House thriving with friendship and emerald treasures, on a famously emerald island, a crossroad of cultures and civilisations, a place embracing diversity like no other.  So close to the sea and the western shores. So close to the forest once being fields of hunting and fields of wild living and dreaming. So blessed by Apollo’s light, the wealth of myth, the clarity of logos, the richness of the past the incredible prospective into the future.

We invite you to come, share, offer what your generosity wants and your heart longs for  and yes, host us to your dreams that connect with ours. We want to meet you at this place of mutual generosity, co-creation, home and holy- days making, soul-work making.

You are so warmly welcome.

Picture

  • Πώς μπορούμε να  συνεργαζόμαστε ώστε να προσφέρουμε όλοι σε όλους, πετυχαίνοντας  «κοινή ωφέλεια» ;
    Ποιες συνθήκες συνεργασίας ευνοούν ώστε να επωφελούνται όλοι οι εμπλεκόμενοι δημιουργικά φορείς ( stakeholders) σε μια συγκυρία που καλεί για υπέρβαση και κοινή προσπάθεια τόσο υλικά όσο και ηθικά, ολόψυχα σε κάθε σημείο κοινωνικής/επιχειρηματικής/οικονομικής/εθελοντικής δράσης;…

  • Πώς μπορούμε να καλλιεργήσουμε περαιτέρω την ποιότητα, φιλοσοφία και σχεδιασμό  οργάνωσης και φιλοξενίας τέτοιων συναντήσεων ακόμα κι όταν δεν έχουν όλοι οι συνεργαζόμενοι φορείς και όλοι όσοι συνεισφέρουν (ειδικοί, εισηγητές, οργανισμοί κλπ.) το ίδιο υπόβαθρο στο σχεδιασμό και τη φιλοξενία διαδικασίας/ομάδας ή εμψύχωσης (process/group design, hosting &  facilitation);

  • Ποιες είναι οι βασικές συνθήκες αμεσότητας, σαφήνειας και διαύγειας από την πλευρά του καλέσματος για να φτάσει το μήνυμα σ’ όσους πραγματικά χρειάζονται στήριξη για την αναβάθμιση της ποιότητας ζωής τους;

  • Με ποιους τρόπους, δημιουργικούς και εναλλακτικούς ενδεχομένως, χρειάζεται να διαμορφώνουμε τέτοια προγράμματα προαγωγής της υγείας στην κοινότητα σε μια εποχή που συστήματα υγείας και πρόνοιας καταρρέουν;

  • Πώς αντέχουμε και … πώς αξιοποιούμε (γιατί όχι;) το οξύμωρο της υποστήριξης του ευάλωτου κοινωνικά σ’ ένα εξίσου ευάλωτο σύστημα υγείας και κοινωνικής πρόνοιας;

  • Τι μπορεί να μας διδάξει η φύση και ο μοναδικός τοπικά πλούτος της για την αλληλεξάρτηση; Πώς τα ζωντανά συστήματα (living systems) δείχνουν το δρόμο για συνέργεια, αλληλεγγύη, συλλογική ανάπτυξη, ευεξία;

    του εαυτού μας, του άλλου, του «ξένου»;

  • Ποια ψυχική γενναιοδωρία καλούμαστε να προτάξουμε τώρα, εδώ;

How do we stick over years with great passion to for example precious methodologies claimed as conducive to sustainable change and development that are seemingly alone unable of creating the overall needed peaceful change?

Some questions about The Art of Denial or positively expressed The Contemporary Art of Orientation:

Q1: What are still our blind spots with regard to how change and transformation happen without falling back into habitual patterns?

Q2: What if the methodologies
- in their own or commonly applied change settings -
lack a more comprehensive understanding of how change happens in and across different systems like humans, groups and organisations?

Q3: What if we shift our strong work focus from "creating the desired change" to "on being heavily stuck? (Leading from transforming habitual applied decision making patterns into ethical decision making patterns taking more of the whole into those processes)

Q4: What else do you see or discern in addition to Q1 to Q3 as promising when looking at patterns of decision making, patterns of processes, patterns of process understanding ... ?

"Drop something in front of a two-year-old, and she's likely to pick it up for you. This is not a learned behavior, psychologist Michael Tomasello argues. Through observations of young children in experiments he himself has designed, Tomasello shows that children are naturally--and uniquely--cooperative". *

“I will argue and present evidence that from around their first birthdays—when they first begin to walk and talk and become truly cultural beings—human children are already cooperative and helpful in many, though obviously not all, situations. And they do not learn this from adults; it comes naturally.”
-- Michael Tomasello in „Why we cooperate”.

When we speak about cooperation we are at the heart of human hearts and activities and provided the foundation of adults’ deeds consist of loving oneself, the other, and care for life in general, we are acting as humans for the sake of our own, social and evolutionary thriving.

“Right at the beginning of sexual reproduction cooperation has been taking place ever since. This lustful way of bio-social cooperation is its basic form and contributed to evolution and the design and development of social relationships and systems. Today we know that the emergences of high crops were always an outcome of complex and multi-dimensional cooperations" (in Tomasello).

Cooperation carried out with a meaningful  - life sustaining purpose – creates by the way a “bunch” of cell stimulating and other hormones. Cooperation with love and care is lifting up one’s being into the realms of interconnectedness, empathy, joy, creativity, growth, coherence, love, feelings of understanding, knowability, manageability, dedication and meaningfulness. (in following Tomasello)

Cooperation is a profound way to transform our Selves by being in relationship with the other(s).

(“Behind all higher functions and their relations hide away, genetically considered, social relationships, that is to say real relationship between humans” (Vygotskij). Human development takes course along a line which starts with what is possible in interaction and leads to that what is possible individually: In other words, what the child today does in working together it will be capable do it tomorrow autonomously” (Vygotskij).

As soon as we want to thrive to become more of our Selves we have to realize that “we become our Selves via others” (Vygotskij). Or in other words: “Self ‘ exists solely on grounds of ‘With” (Nancy).

These few insights on cooperation point out the manifold implications cooperation holds for our social and consequently our individual flourishing.

And how we can become healthier as groups, organizations, societies, and cultures does evidently rely on the magic of cooperations amongst humans.

What was your most remarkable cooperation in your life and how did you change by its experience?

To postulate that there is my Self and your Self is like postulating that mental illness exists when only one person lives on this planet. So the Self is always a continuously updated Self-relation and not an essence (substance) in itself*.

This precious understanding of Self contributes to our work in counseling, mentoring, and coaching which our clients feel as trust, embrace and ...

*(Of course there are these two unique human beings, you, Maria, and me with our minds, bodies ... sitting on a bus and relating to each other in a  beautiful Self-process)
